Mars Challenge · Current edition 2027

Your territory already has talent. Activate it around real-world challenges.

Mars Challenge helps cities, regions and governments turn territorial challenges into missions for youth learning, creation and collaboration.

Young people, educational institutions, public bodies and local partners enter a shared process: investigating real problems, combining different forms of knowledge, making decisions, building proposals and making their work visible.

Government does not need to invent a new methodology from scratch. It needs to create the conditions for local talent to act.

01 / Real problems do not arrive organised by department.

Real problems do not arrive organised by department.

Water, food, soil, habitat, resilience, technology or wellbeing are rarely just environmental, educational, economic or social issues.

They are systems.

And systems require people who can connect knowledge that normally sits in separate disciplines and institutions.

Mars Challenge creates a setting in which young people from different backgrounds work together on problems without predetermined answers.

Knowledge stops being only what someone knows.

It becomes what they can mobilise when reality becomes complex.

02 / Turn a territorial challenge into a mission.

Turn a territorial challenge into a mission.

A territorial activation can begin with a real local priority and turn it into a context for learning and creation.

The process connects four movements:

Contextualise. The global challenge of the edition meets recognisable priorities and realities within the territory.

Convene. Schools, universities, young people, educators and local partners enter a shared mission.

Create. Multidisciplinary teams research, decide, prototype and present proposals using the Mars Challenge methodology.

Connect. Local activity may connect with the national and international stages available under the relevant edition and participation model.

The global logic stays consistent. The context belongs to the territory.

03 / What a government actually activates

What a government actually activates

This is not simply about generating ideas.

A well-designed territorial activation creates conditions for:

Young talent in action. Young people move from being recipients of policy to becoming authors of proposals.

Institutional collaboration. Organisations that usually work in parallel gain a concrete mission around which to collaborate.

Educational capacity. Educators and mentors can access preparation and tools for challenge-based learning according to the participation model.

Territorial intelligence. Projects, chosen themes and participant processes can surface useful signals about emerging concerns, interests and capabilities.

International connection. The territory becomes connected to a broader ecosystem of Mars Challenge institutions, learning and experiences.

This is not an automatic promise of economic growth.

It is infrastructure for making talent, learning and collaboration more visible and actionable.

04 / One territory. Four forces. One mission.

One territory. Four forces. One mission.

Government Convenes, provides context, connects actors and creates institutional space for the mission.

Educational institutions Mobilise young people and educators and connect the experience to the local learning ecosystem.

Young people Research, question, decide, create and retain authorship over their proposals.

Local partners Can contribute expertise, real-world context, challenges, spaces, specialists and connections.

Mars Challenge provides the common architecture that allows these actors to work within one system without erasing their distinct roles.

05 / The territory convenes. Mars Challenge provides the structure.

The territory convenes. Mars Challenge provides the structure.

The territory

Defines the scope.

Appoints a lead person or team.

Mobilises institutions and local channels.

Helps contextualise priorities.

Coordinates local implementation requirements where relevant.

Mars Challenge

Provides the pedagogical and operating framework.

Provides methodology, platform, guides and criteria.

Structures the team journey.

Supports preparation of relevant facilitators according to the participation model.

Connects local activation with the applicable national and international architecture.

The objective is not to import an event into a municipality.

It is to create the conditions for a local ecosystem to take part in a common process.

06 / It is not another hackathon.

It is not another hackathon.

A hackathon may last a few hours.

Mars Challenge is a process.

Teams move through a structured journey: recognising strengths, researching, questioning assumptions, analysing problems, developing concepts, building prototypes, working on Earth Return, communicating and defending decisions.

Earth-Back Thinking introduces a critical constraint: think under extreme conditions and return to Earth with responsible proposals.

Real-Life Readiness asks another question:

Can a person use what they know, with others, when reality does not provide the answer?

Agency turns learning into authorship: building judgement, deciding, acting and accepting responsibility.

That is why the most important outcome is not only the project.

It is the person learning how to decide while building it.

07 / From participation to evidence

From participation to evidence

Serious public policy needs more than photographs from an event.

Depending on the implementation scope and the monitoring mechanisms activated, Mars Challenge can help make visible:

team participation and diversity;

the issues young people choose to investigate;

projects and prototypes;

documented learning processes;

the forms of knowledge mobilised;

recurring territorial themes;

institutional and educator participation.

These data should not automatically be treated as evidence of causal impact.

But they can provide a territory with a useful evidence layer on what young people are investigating, building and considering important.

08 / Local at the starting point. Global in reach.

Local at the starting point. Global in reach.

Mars Challenge is designed to connect local activity with an international architecture.

An activation may begin in a school, university, city or region and, where the participation model and edition rules permit, continue through national and international stages.

The Grand Jam is the international point of convergence where learning, projects, young people, institutions and territories become visible to a wider community.

A city should not have to choose between local relevance and global connection.

The system is designed to connect the two.

09 / Start with the territory, not the format.

Start with the territory, not the format.

Do not begin by asking how many people can fit into an event.

Begin by asking:

What challenge do we need to make visible?

Which young people do we want to mobilise?

Which institutions are already part of this system?

What capability should remain after the experience?

From there, the Mars Challenge team can define an appropriate activation scope with you.

10 / Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Mars Challenge only suitable for large cities?

No. Scope can be adapted to the capacity, institutional network and objectives of each territory.

Does the programme require a physical event?

Not necessarily. Physical, virtual and hybrid implementation models can be used according to the applicable model and edition.

Does government need to develop the methodology?

No. Mars Challenge provides the relevant methodology, framework and operating tools. The territory focuses mainly on convening, context and local coordination.

Can a city propose its own challenge?

Local context must remain consistent with the Challenge, Element and rules of the relevant edition. Within that framework, territorial contextualisation can form part of the process.

Does every project reach the international stage?

No. Routes, qualification and access depend on the applicable participation model and edition rules.

Is there one fixed price?

Scope, commercial terms, benefits and timelines depend on the model, market and edition. Confirm the current proposal for your territory.
