01 / When the answer is no longer in the textbook, teaching changes too
When the answer is no longer in the textbook, teaching changes too
When an answer is known, a teacher can explain the route.
When the problem is open, the task becomes different:
How do I help students learn without doing their thinking for them?
That is where mentoring begins.
02 / Teacher is who you are. Mentor is the role you take on.
Teacher is who you are. Mentor is the role you take on.
Mentoring does not replace teaching.
It describes a pedagogical role within the Mars Challenge experience.
The same educator can teach disciplinary content in one context and facilitate an open challenge in another.
03 / A good mentor does not occupy the centre
A good mentor does not occupy the centre
Mentors:
ask productive questions;
provide constructive feedback;
facilitate reflection;
encourage iteration;
support interdisciplinary collaboration;
care for emotional and ethical wellbeing.
Their role is active.
But measured.
04 / There is a line that should not be crossed
There is a line that should not be crossed
The mentor is not an author or co-author.
They do not:
develop the project for the team;
define technical solutions;
code for participants;
design or build prototypes on their behalf;
control the pitch;
choose the final solution.
Guidance must not become substitution.
05 / Nobody should ask you to do this without preparation
Nobody should ask you to do this without preparation
Mars Challenge includes structured teacher development.
Its purpose is to strengthen the pedagogical judgement needed to design, support and evaluate learning centred on real challenges.
It is not intended to turn every teacher into a methodology specialist.
It prepares educators to accompany learning differently.
06 / Four missions for a change of role
Four missions for a change of role
These four missions are teacher development modules; they are distinct from the participation missions of the 2027 edition.
Mission 1 — Enter the Mission
Understand purpose, framework and role.
Mission 2 — Accompany the Student Journey
Understand what teams experience.
Mission 3 — Accompany with Judgement
Work with ethics, authorship, AI, inclusion and wellbeing.
Mission 4 — Accompany without Overload
Integrate feedback and assessment sustainably.
07 / Learn as you teach
Learn as you teach
Teachers experience an approach coherent with the one they will later facilitate.
Experiential learning should not be taught only through passive instruction.
08 / What is developed is not a collection of techniques
What is developed is not a collection of techniques
Pedagogical accompaniment.
Challenge- and project-based learning.
Formative feedback.
Applied research.
Contextual innovation.
Responsible AI use.
Wellbeing.
Inclusion.
Student authorship.
The common thread is pedagogical judgement.
09 / With AI in the room, teacher judgement matters more
With AI in the room, teacher judgement matters more
AI can generate answers.
Educators help learners ask:
Is it correct?
Has it been verified?
What is missing?
What assumption is hidden?
Who is accountable for the decision?
Technology can support learning.
It should not replace the learner's critical and creative process.
10 / Feedback is not a disguised solution
Feedback is not a disguised solution
“What evidence supports that decision?”
opens thinking.
“Use this solution.”
closes it.
“What would happen if this assumption were wrong?”
opens thinking.
“This is what I would do.”
may replace it.
Mentoring requires knowing the difference.
11 / Mentoring also means caring for the context
Mentoring also means caring for the context
Pressure.
Conflict.
Criticism.
Failure.
Uncertainty.
AI.
Diversity.
Inclusion.
Wellbeing.
These are not separate from learning.
They are part of the conditions in which learning happens.
12 / Innovation should not mean unlimited workload
Innovation should not mean unlimited workload
The training described in the 2026 reference is designed to be:
self-directed;
flexible;
asynchronous;
modular.
The internal framework described in the 2026 reference describes approximately 10 hours of progressive training.
One complete mission focuses specifically on mentoring without overload.
Confirm the duration, format and sessions planned in the current implementation for your country or institution.
13 / Who can access the training?
Who can access the training?
The 2026 Rules contemplate:
teachers designated by participating institutions;
mentors and educational accompaniers;
institutional ambassadors and coordinators.
Depending on implementation, training may be required for some roles or recommended as good practice.
14 / Recognition exists. Automatic entitlement does not.
Recognition exists. Automatic entitlement does not.
Depending on the route and fulfilment of criteria, participation may result in:
participation records;
Mission Mentor or other internal recognition;
certification from Mars Challenge and/or Virtual Educa where applicable.
These do not automatically constitute formal academic accreditation.
They also do not guarantee competitive outcomes.
15 / In 2026, the role can continue beyond the initial team
In 2026, the role can continue beyond the initial team
In 2026, a voluntary mentor route exists for certain national and international team-recomposition stages.
It is activated through a specific call.
Mentors accompanying a selected national representative team may also continue into later stages under the applicable Rules.
16 / There is already a documented educator community
There is already a documented educator community
Across 2023–2025:
730+ mentors and teachers
are documented alongside:
2,000+ young people
and
240+ documented teams/projects.
These are participation metrics, not causal proof of teaching impact.
17 / Mentors do not operate outside the system
Mentors do not operate outside the system
School.
University.
Vocational centre.
Territory.
Country.
Organisation.
The specific mentor experience depends on how Mars Challenge is activated in that context.
18 / Perhaps the question is not “Can I guide this solution?”
Perhaps the question is not “Can I guide this solution?”
Perhaps it is:
“Can I create the conditions in which young people learn how to build it?”
Ask.
Observe.
Demand evidence.
Protect authorship.
Give feedback.
And know when not to give the answer you already have.
That is the mentor's challenge.
19 / Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to be a STEAM specialist to be a mentor?
No. Training exists to align teachers with the pedagogical approach and the mentor role.
Do I have to know how to solve the challenge?
No. Your role is not to develop the solution on behalf of the participants.
Can I give the team ideas?
You can use questions, feedback and reflection. You should not impose the solution, technical decisions or your own ideas as the team’s work.
Can I build or correct the prototype?
Not on behalf of the team. Authorship and development belong to the participants.
Is there training?
Yes. Mars Challenge includes structured STEAM+ teacher development and active methodologies.
How long does it take?
The framework described in the 2026 reference content indicates approximately 10 hours of progressive training. The specific configuration can be updated and should be confirmed for the current route.
Is it online?
The general format described in the 2026 reference is self-directed and asynchronous through the platform or enabled environments. Confirm the configuration applicable to your institution or country.
Will I receive a certificate?
Participation records, recognition or certification may be available depending on the format and applicable criteria. They are not automatic.
Is Mission Mentor an official academic certification?
Not necessarily. Recognition does not automatically constitute official accreditation.
Do I need to belong to a participating institution?
Different participation possibilities exist, but access to training and roles depends on the applicable implementation, institution, country and call.
Can I accompany a team to The Grand Jam?
In certain 2026 routes, yes, if the required conditions are fulfilled. This is not an automatic entitlement for every mentor; confirm the current edition’s conditions.
