Elena Igelmo from Getafe Joins NASA's Houston Space Center via 'Reto Marte' Educational Challenge
Elena Igelmo, a student from Getafe's Instituto Público José Hierro, participated in the 'Reto Marte' initiative promoted by the Getafe City Council, which engages youth in STEAM through space exploration projects. Following her recognized proposal at the national phase, she traveled to NASA's Space Center in Houston, experiencing international collaboration and interdisciplinary space science activities. The third edition of 'Reto Marte' is scheduled for early November.
Elena Igelmo, a student at the Instituto Público José Hierro in Getafe, has recently traveled to NASA's Space Center in Houston after participating in the educational initiative 'Reto Marte' (The Mars Challenge), organized by the Getafe City Council. This initiative aims to foster STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) vocations among young people by encouraging innovative proposals inspired by space exploration. In the latest edition of 'Reto Marte,' over 150 students from Getafe developed projects related to these themes.
Elena, alongside her teammate David, received special recognition during the national phase of the challenge held at the Local Employment and Training Agency (ALEF) in Getafe. This award granted them access to the NASA Houston visit; Elena has already undertaken the experience, while David is scheduled to participate next year. During her time at NASA, Elena engaged with students from various countries and gained insights into the interdisciplinary efforts required for space exploration.
Looking forward, the Getafe City Council has announced the third edition of 'Reto Marte,' under the slogan "Getafe, Capital of Mars," to be held on November 3rd, 4th, and 5th. The event invites students to propose solutions to Earth-based challenges inspired by space exploration, continuing its mission to inspire and educate youth in STEAM fields through a space-themed educational platform.
