OSMED and The Mars Challenge Unite to Inspire Young Innovators Ahead of The Grand Jam 2026 in Getafe
The Organization for Space Medicine, Engineering and Design (OSMED) has partnered with The Mars Challenge to blend interdisciplinary spaceflight expertise with experiential learning. This collaboration engages professionals and students from diverse fields to mentor youth developing Earth and Mars-oriented solutions, culminating in the international final event, The Grand Jam 2026, in Getafe, Spain.

The Organization for Space Medicine, Engineering and Design (OSMED) and The Mars Challenge (Reto Marte) have launched a global collaboration aimed at integrating interdisciplinary knowledge on human spaceflight with an experiential learning framework. The goal is to foster cross-disciplinary understanding in medicine, engineering, design, and operations to develop human-centered systems applicable for Mars exploration and terrestrial benefits. This alliance connects OSMED's international community—including professionals and students involved in space medicine, engineering, design, research, and operations—with youth participants from The Mars Challenge working in multidisciplinary teams. Preparatory activities have included two educational sessions: one on 'Martian Context and Technical Data' held on August 28, 2026, featuring experts from NASA and OSMED, and another on 'From Mars to Earth' conducted on September 25, 2026, with a former NASA Mars Architecture lead. The partnership plans mentorship programs, technical workshops, the launch of OSMED's European chapter for ongoing interdisciplinary exchange, and a Mars-focused roundtable discussion. Culminating these efforts, The Grand Jam 2026—the international final of The Mars Challenge—will take place from November 3 to 5, 2026, at the Federico García Lorca Theater in Getafe, Madrid. Finalist teams will present projects, collaborate, undergo evaluations, and participate in an awards ceremony. According to OSMED's president, this collaboration offers seasoned professionals and emerging innovators alike a unique platform to challenge assumptions and strengthen ideas that could advance human exploration and Earthly life. The Mars Challenge CEO emphasizes that combining diverse expertise provides young innovators with opportunities to develop impactful solutions inspired by Mars' challenges but applicable to Earth’s needs, reinforcing the idea of having no backup planet but a better plan.
